FULL VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:
Hi there, welcome. My name is Heather Monthie. And I am the founder of electric monarch drones and educators who drone and I’m a flight instructor. I’ve been a pilot since 1997. I’m a huge aviation enthusiast, and I’m also a drone educator. And in this video, what I wanted to do is share with you my FAA part 107 exam study guide that I’ve put together to help you prepare to pass the FAA part 107 exam. So if you’re wondering whether or not you need to take this part 107 exam, really quickly, the answer is, the rule of thumb that I always give people is this, that if you are not flying a recreational flight, it is commercial. So if you are not just out flying around for your own enjoyment and your own recreation, it is a commercial flight money does not need to exchange hands, in the minds of the FAA, or in the eyes of the FAA. If somebody comes to you and says, Hey, I want you to take pictures for my real estate listing, you’re not charging them. Even though there’s no money exchanging hands, it’s still a commercial flight. So if you are interested in starting up a drone business, a drone, side hustle, whatever it may be, you will need to have your part 107 exam. Again, this is just for people in the US. Okay, so I put together this study guide, because the FAA does publish all of the different information that you need to know for the part 107 exam, they publish it for free, it’s all over the internet, it’s just not in one clear, succinct place. So what I’ve done is I’ve put together this study guide to show you the bits and pieces of the different publications that the FAA puts out that you can study to pass the part one exam, there are courses out there, I have a course, I have helped other companies publish their courses, specifically around the aerospace portion, which can be a little tricky. But if you are just you’re interested in just finding out what all the different free resources are out there. That’s what this document is for you. So this first page is just a little bit of information about myself, I’ve got a Facebook group business strategies for drone pilots. It’s also a part 107 Study Group, so you can post questions in there. And then this is just an introduction to the document, this page right here. Once this video is completed and published on YouTube, we’ll have a link to this video on YouTube here. So I have to make the video first, which is what I’m doing right now. So you’ll see that there. And the next page here, I give you some study tips. So first is you want to take a look at some of the different practice questions that are out there. There’s practice exams that are out there King schools is one that they’ve got some free practice questions available on the website. It’s not very many questions, but it can give you an idea of what those questions look like ASC and Gleim. also publish practice exams, those two links, there are two paid practice tests and practice exams. But I do suggest that you take those practice exams before actually going and taking your FA part 107 exam you want to get you want to be getting around 80%. Before you go and take that exam, you do have to have a 70% to pass the exam.
But if you’re hitting 80%, consistently, on the practice exams, you’re probably ready to take the test. So here are a couple different study tips that I have for you is the first is to familiarize yourself with the exam format. Understand that is a 60 question multiple choice exam, you’re gonna get two hours to complete the exam. And you have to get at least 70% of the questions correct to 70% of the questions correct to pass the exam, which would be 42 out of the 60 questions. If you do need accommodations, the FAA does provide some guidance on how you can request those accommodations for that for that exam. Make sure that you understand the question, don’t just read through it super quick. And you think back to when you were in school and you were trying to learn how to take written tests. And it’s really just reading that question and trying to understand what the what is the what is the purpose for the question, what is it that they’re really asking there? And that’s going to help you eliminate some of those incorrect answers. So that goes into the next tip that I have for you here is to make sure that you read all the answer choices. Before selecting an answer, there might be one answer that’s better than the other. And so you want to make sure that you know what all of your different choices are. If you’re unsure what the answer is a strategy is always to eliminate incorrect answers. So you can by process of elimination, ideally figure out what is the correct answer for that question. And then answer those questions that you know first, you can mark questions and come back to them later. So if you’re unsure of a question, you can either answer it and mark it and come to it later or you can skip the question return to it later. Make sure that you go back and double check those though if you leave a question blank, it will be marked incorrect. I’d rather that you at least attempt to answer the question and get it wrong versus just not answering at all and you’re 100% going to get that question wrong. So make sure that you do go back and review those ones that you have that you have marked or that you have not answered. And take your time. You’ve got two hours to go
Complete this exam. So that gives you a sufficient amount of time per question. To go through the question, look at the possible choices that you have to answer. And just really read that question carefully. Make sure you understand it before you go on to the next question, you know, you’re not in a huge rush, you’ve got two hours to complete this exam. And then just relax, stay calm, you test anxiety is real. But it’s not intended to be overly difficult. They just want to make sure that you understand the rules, the regulations, the airspace in which you’re flying in where there’s also crewed aircraft or manned aircraft. And you know, the FAA wants to make sure that you’re flying safe and legal. So as long as you study thoroughly, you should have no problem passing it. So the first here is the airman certification standards, I do have a video on my YouTube channel that goes over how to read the airman certification standards. So if you go to the electric monarch drones YouTube channel, look for that airman certification standards video, it’s a whole video just on how to read this document. But what this is, is a document that the FAA publishes, that says, we’re going to test you on something, here is exactly what we’re going to test you on. So those of you that maybe have worked in education, know that when you are testing people on something, you have to tell them what you’re going to test them on. All right, that’s just how it works. And so the FAA has published the airman certification standards for all of their pilot certificates that are out there and saying, This is what we’re going to test you on. Alright, so you can download this document for free. There’s a link to it here on the FAA website, you can go directly to the FAA website and download it there, you always want to make sure that you’re using the most current links, get things from the horse’s mouth, go right to the FAA website to get this information. So as of October 23 2023, here is the most current airman certification standards. So this document is going to give you a nice list of everything that you’re going to be tested on, you can also purchase a printed copy, if you would like to, you know, I’ve got a link to it here. But I really don’t think you need to, I think if you just download the document from the FAA, print it up, you’re good to go. Use that as a checklist as you are studying for the exam, make sure that you’ve got everything covered before you go take that exam. Then there is this initial course, through faa safety.gov. For the part 107 small unmanned aircraft systems, you’ll see s UAS that means small unmanned aircraft systems. This is a course that was actually created for part 61 pilot so so pilots that fly in crude or manned aircraft, sport pilot, recreational private pilot, commercial pilot, airline transport pilot, and then they want to operate as a remote pilot under Part 107. So this is sort of that transition course for them. Okay? It is not enough if you are not a part 61 pilot to pass the part 107 exam. All right. But this does give you some really good foundational information. You know, it’s definitely not gonna have enough information for you, especially on the National Airspace System. Because if you are a sport pilot, recreational pilot, private pilot, etc. It is assumed that you’ve already been tested on this. So that kind of information won’t necessarily be in here. But you can certainly go and take this course if you’re not a part 61 pilot to get an introduction to the part 107 content. The pilots Handbook of aeronautical knowledge is a document a book that has been around for ages, every every pilot in aviation has a copy of this book. It is a thick book, it’s thick, you do not need to read all of it. Okay? There is some pieces in there that are important for you, as you are preparing for the part 107 exam. There’s a section on aeronautical decision making, whether an airport operations so it’s chapters 211, and 14, that you should read in the pilots Handbook of aeronautical knowledge, you can purchase a printed copy of this on Amazon, I do make sure I do suggest that you make sure that you are getting a colored copy of that book. There are some things in many of these books, that color coding is very important. And if you get a black and white copy, I did that on accident, you’re not gonna be able to read the charts. So you can download chapters 211 and 14 to learn more about aeronautical decision making, whether in airport operations or if you have a printed copy of the pilots Handbook of aeronautical knowledge, just read chapters 211 and 1414 CFR Part 107. So this is what you’re actually going to be
operating under as a remote pilot. You’re operating under those rules. So CFR stands for the Code of Federal Regulations. And part 107 is the you know the part under 14 CFR in which you’re operating as an S UAS pilot, so you need to know this regulation in and out so the FAA does publish a book every year. It’s called the far aim. Fer is Federal Aviation Regulations aim is the Aeronautical Information Manual. Another release
Super thick book, you do not need to know all of it at all. And a lot of times people don’t even purchase this book anymore because you can read the CFR is right online, that’s ecfr.gov. I’ve got a link to it here. And you can read through the regulations there. So that’s exactly what the rules and regulations that you will be operating under as a part 107 pilot. So that’s the ECFR Electronic Code of Federal Regulations, Advisory Circular 107 dash two I, that should actually state 107 dash two a, that is the most current version. So I’ve got 107 dash two eight here, the FAA publishes advisory circulars, which are supplemental documents. So it’s not necessarily stuff that’s going to fall under the regulations. But it’s more informational to help you understand certain things. So the FAA has published Advisory Circular 107 dash to a, that is really helpful for you to understand things like the National Airspace System, as a remote pilot, so you can download this document. And, you know, take a look at it, print it up, read through it, there’s a lot of really good information in there for you. Again, at the time of this recording 107 dash two A is the most current version of that Advisory Circular.
Then we’ve got the FAA add to dash 22. So this document is sometimes just referred to as add to, this is the study guide that the FAA has published for the remote pilot exam, you can download this again, right off of their website, they do list a whole bunch of different manuals and handbooks and that kind of thing on this particular website. So you’ll just want to scroll down to the add to, it’s a small unmanned aircraft systems study guide. And you can download the most current version and you can use that to help you prepare for the part 107 exam. And then next, we did talk a little bit about the aim of the Aeronautical Information Manual, these are going to be things that are really going to help you with procedures, operations, things like this that are not necessarily a regulation. Okay, so the aim is a very important manual for any pilot of any rating. So again, you can purchase copies of this off of Amazon, make sure you’re purchasing the most current year. It does, it is updated every year. So you want to make sure that you got the most current version if you are purchasing it, the 2024 firing is available for purchase. Now. You do not need to purchase it, you can read it all online. Okay. So for the part 107 exam, again, you don’t need to read this whole thing. It’s huge, right? The important pieces for you are Chapter Three on airspace. Chapter Four air traffic controls, specifically section one, two and three. Chapter Five is going to be air traffic procedures. Chapter Seven is safety of flight specifically sections one, five and six. Then you’re going to read chapter eight medical facts for pilots, specifically section one on fitness for flight, and then section or chapter nine aeronautical charts. And really the publications, specifically section one types of charts available, you can certainly read other sections to it, it’s just these are the areas in which you’ll be tested on the part 107 exam.
Then the National Airspace System for remote pilots, this is a very complex system to help with air traffic control and the flow of air traffic provide separation of services between manned aircraft and unmanned aircraft or manned or crewed aircraft or uncrewed aircraft. And it helps with separation of services around busy airports. Okay. And so you as a remote pilot are operating in that same airspace that there are that there’s aircraft with people on them. Okay, so the FAA really wants to make sure that you understand this airspace because if your drone hits an aircraft with people in it, it will damage that aircraft and put the lives of the people in that aircraft in danger. All right. And now you might say, well, drones can only fly up to 400 feet AGL and aircraft have to stay above 500 feet. AGL. So how is that gonna work? Right? Well, no, think about it. When airplanes are landing and taking off. They are operating, they’re flying below 500 feet AGL. So they’re coming into the same airspace in which drones might be flying. Okay. And then also part of the responsibility of yourself is understanding and knowing that yes, you can only go up to 400 feet AGL there are some people that don’t know that and they choose they just they don’t abide by it. So you need to understand the Airspace System. This is probably the most
frustrating piece for people as they’re as they’re studying for the part 107 exam. It’s very complex.
And I’ve got a whole bunch of YouTube videos, I’ve got more coming. So make sure you check out the electric monarch drones YouTube channel that will help you feel just a little bit more confident with airspace. So specifically, if you’re going to study airspace, you’re going to look at chapter 15 of the pilots Handbook of aeronautical knowledge, you’re going to look at subpart B of 14 CFR
Part 107 is going to have some information there about airspace. Chapter Three of the aim covers airspace and depth aim is a really good resource when it comes to trying to understand airspace. Okay? But again, I’ve got some really good YouTube videos on my YouTube channel, electric Monache drones. So FAA VFR sectional charts, this is what you’ll see this is the whole country this is the whole United States, it’s a VFR sectional charts are the maps of the sky. This is what we use as pilots when we’re flying under visual flight rules or VFR. And there is all sorts of really great information out there to help you learn how to read those sectional charts. And I’ve also got a webinar on my YouTube channel, electric monarch drones go over there, you can search for how to read sectional charts like a pro, and I’ve got a whole webinar there on how to read sectional charts. It’s an hour long and we could probably spend four hours just on sectional charts. But you’ll want to make sure that you know how to read these charts, you’re going to have questions on how to read them. Okay. Then we’ve got the UAS facility. Map website. This is a site to help you visualize all the different UAS data that’s out there, you can see any flight restrictions, airports with control towers, all sorts of really good information that’s going to be helpful for you as a remote pilot. The FAA aeronautical charts User Guide is a resource to help you decipher aeronautical charts. So as you’re reading through some of those other resources, the AME the pilots Handbook of aeronautical knowledge, my YouTube videos, things like this, you can also come to this document and it’s going to give you some more information on how to read FAA, aeronautical charts, make sure you’re looking at VFR sectional charts. There are other charts out there are other types of charts out there that you do not need to know about as a remote pilot. VFR is what we’re flying under visual flight rules. Then we have the before you fly app, this is an app that was created by both the FAA and aloft which used to be called Kitty Hawk. This is an easy way for you to check your local airspace before a flight. It does not provide airspace authorizations for you, but you can use it to to check the different airspace like if you’re considering flying in a certain area, you can bring up the app on your phone, it’ll pick up your location, it’ll give you some information about that airspace of where you are, you can move it around as well to so you can figure out what is the airspace you know where you work or where you live or wherever you may be. Then you’ve got the aloft app, which is an app that was created for remote pilots to receive airspace authorizations through a lance request. And you will need to know what a lance request is for that for the part 107 exam. But that is the system that is used for you to get an authorization to fly in controlled airspace. It you do not contact control towers you do not get on the radio, you do not get on the telephone, you will submit aliens request so you’ll need to know how to use how to use this. Know Before You fly.org is a website that was created by a few different organizations. In partnership with the FAA. It’s helped you understand drone laws where you can fly other things that you need to consider as a remote pilot. So I definitely suggest taking a look at that website. Then I’ve got just a couple other websites out here for you to check out as you prepare for your part 107 exam, the FAA does have a lot of really good information on their website. So I’ve got links here to a couple different resources that they have. They do have a whole page for unmanned aircraft systems information about where you can fly airspace restrictions, no drone zones, they go into a little bit about the before you fly app, the lance system
information about certificated remote pilots, including commercial operators, which would be you after each part 107 exam completed the NOTAM website, which you’ll need to know how to use and check that information Advisory Circular on aeronautical decision making. So it’s how do you make decisions before during and after a flight. And then there is a remote pilot testing supplement, I have a whole video on my YouTube channel and how to use that remote pilot testing supplement. This is the book that you will get during the test that’s got all the charts and all the graphs and all of the things in it that the questions will refer to and you can get a copy of that before you actually take the test. So that video is going to show you how to use that testing supplement, just go to electric monarch drones search for remote pilot testing supplement. And then sky vector is a website that you can use you don’t have to purchase the VFR sectional charts to learn how to read them. Back in the day we used to. We used to purchase printed ones and lay them out on a flat table and chart your flights. I still like to do that. But skyvector is a way that you can see these charts without having to purchase them. You can see them all online. You can see the most current ones and I do have a video on that on my YouTube channel as well.
also head over to electrical monarch drones on YouTube look for skyvector. And again, I got a link here to my YouTube channel, I’ve got all sorts of really good information there, more coming, lots of stuff scheduled to come out in late 2023 2024. And then I’ve got some information here about the drone for American Academy. This is an academy that I am launching in November of 2023. So if you’re watching this later, it will have been launched. But this is a hub where I will be hosting different workshops, webinars, courses, study materials, other great resources that you can use to help you start and grow your drone business, I do have a few things there already, we just haven’t officially launched it yet. So you can check that out. You can go to fly electric monarch.com. Everything is going to be there. And so thank you for downloading this, this part 107 study guide, I hope you find it helpful. You know, again, I put it together because the FAA does share all this stuff for free. It’s all out there. It’s just knowing where to find it and where to get it. So thank you again and make sure that if you’re watching this on YouTube, please like and subscribe to my channel and then maybe share this video with somebody who you think might find that helpful. Somebody else who might be also studying for the part 107 exam. I’d like to get this information out there and get as many remote pilots certified and flying safely and legally as we can. So thank you talk to you soon.
